Akumal - "Place of the Turtles"

We couldn't be happier with our choice for a wedding destination and we hope you'll agree. Akumal is a tranquil seaside village where visitors can spend their days relaxing under a palapa and snorkeling off the coral reef. The more venturesome can use Akumal's central location to explore the Riviera Maya's other attractions, including the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

LOCATION
Akumal lies in the heart of the Riviera Maya on the Caribbean coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. It is 62 miles south of Cancun, 24 miles south of Playa del Carmen and 14 miles north of Tulum. The Akumal area is comprised of 5 miles of coastal strip that make up three separate bays:  Akumal, Aventuras, and Half Moon. A hamlet of villas, condos and small resorts, Akumal is a low-key alternative to the hustle and bustle of all-inclusives and megaresorts. Our hotel, the Vista del Mar, is in Half Moon Bay, a 15-minute walk from Akumal Bay and a 10-minute walk from Yal-Ku Lagoon.

BEACHES

Federal law allows anyone the right to walk and swim on any beach in Mexico, though in practice, some beaches can be hard to access. The Riviera Maya's world famous beaches are found in Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, but the beautiful beaches of Akumal are picturesque and without the crowds of more visited areas. Much of the Akumal coastal area is rocky, yet the wide sandy beach at Akumal Bay is popular for sunbathing and swimming, as is the more narrow and isolated beach in front of the Vista Del Mar. Water shoes are recommended for water entry as sea plants and broken pieces of boulder coral can be unpleasant underfoot. To get a glimpse of some other gorgeous beaches in the area, check out Loco Gringo's aerial maps.

DINING
One would expect a fishing village full of tourists to have excellent seafood, and that certainly appears to be the case in Akumal. Some notable restaurants include Vista del Mar's neighbor, La Buena Vida, a casual and inexpensive restaurant and beach bar which serves lunch and dinner and features chair swings, a resident dog, and a long happy hour. A short walk down the beach is La Lunita, a romantic bistro and popular spot for waterfront dining. Lol Ha at Akumal Bay is the largest and oldest restaurant in town. Lol Ha also has a palapa snack bar, juice bar and pizzeria. In Akumal's central plaza, Plaza Ukana, is La Cueva del Pescador, specializing in seafood dinners. Next door is Turtle Bay Cafe, where patrons rave about brunch and treats, including wedding cake!If you're craving Italian, Que Onda, close to Yal-Ku Lagoon, serves a romantic dinner. There are also countless restaurants in Playa del Carmen and Tulum. And if you're too hungover to leave your room, perhaps someone with a condo kitchenette will make you some huevos rancheros.

FAMILY FRIENDLY
With its slower pace, calm and shallow coves, and dozens of nearby activities, Akumal is recognized as a terrific destination for families. If you want a break from the kids, leave them at Hotel Akumal Caribe's Kid's Club at Akumal's main bay.

SHOPPING
Akumal has a half dozen boutique and gift shops as well as two grocery and three convenience stores. The well-stocked Super Mar Caribe lies across from the main Akumal entrance. Las Dos Palmas and the larger Super Chomak are at the town's center. Midway Food is in Half Moon Bay, as is the Vista del Mar's Corner Store. All stores accept pesos or American dollars and a few accept credit cards.

SERVICES (Shopping, ATM, Wi-Fi, Phones)
There is an ATM at the SuperChomak grocery store, though ATMs at banks in Playa del Carmen or Tulum are reported to be more reliable. Money exchange services are available at Travel Services Akumal. Please see our Important Info page for more about money.

CyberAkumal, with computer, fax and phone services, has one location at the entrance of town and another 130 feet north of the Vista del Mar.  Lol Ha and La Buena Vida have free Wi-Fi services.

Cell phones work in Akumal, but check with your provider that you have international calling capabilities. Usually, you will dial 001 + Area Code + 7 digit number for calls to the U.S. or to other U.S. cell phones in Mexico. Much higher rates generally apply ($1 - $3/minute).

SEA TURTLES
True to its meaning in Mayan, Akumal is "place of the turtles." Akumal beaches provide nesting grounds for endangered Loggerhead and Green sea turtles. During the months of April and May, sea turtles deposit eggs that will hatch in July and August. An important local organization, the Centro Ecologico Akumal (CEA), works to educate tourists and preserve habitat. The turtles of Akumal took a hard hit when Hurricane Dean pounded the Akumal beach at the height of hatching season in 2007. To help the CEA with their turtle population recovery efforts, we've added the CEA to our Registry. You can learn more about sea turtles in person at the CEA's information center in Akumal.
